Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before engaging a geotechnical engineer for your project.

A geotechnical investigation characterises the subsurface soil and rock conditions at your site. It's required by most councils and certifiers for development applications — particularly for Class 1–9 buildings, subdivisions, retaining walls, and any structure near slopes or flood-prone areas. Even where not mandated, it protects you from costly surprises during construction.

Field work for a standard residential or small commercial investigation typically takes one day on site. The full report — including laboratory testing, analysis, and writing — is usually delivered within 5–10 business days from fieldwork completion. Complex sites, large subdivisions, or projects requiring specialist testing may take longer. We'll give you a clear timeline upfront.

A Phase 1 Geotechnical Site Assessment (ESA) is a desktop and site walkover review — no soil sampling — that identifies potential contamination sources based on site history. A Phase 2 ESA involves physical sampling and laboratory testing to confirm or rule out contamination. Phase 2 is required when Phase 1 identifies a Recognised Geotechnical Condition (REC) or when triggered by the planning authority.

Cost depends on site size, access, investigation depth, number of boreholes or test pits, and the scope of analysis required. A standard residential investigation typically ranges from $1,500–$4,500. Commercial and infrastructure projects vary widely. We provide a fixed-fee proposal once we understand your site and project requirements — contact us for an indicative fee.

Absolutely — this is standard practice and we encourage it. Geotechnical and structural engineers working collaboratively from early design produces better, safer, and more cost-effective foundations. We're happy to liaise directly with your structural engineer, attend design meetings, and respond promptly to technical queries throughout design and construction.

GeoSense is STS Geotechnics' sister company, providing the drilling and field investigation capability that supports our geotechnical and environmental engineering work. When you engage STS, GeoSense's rigs and crews carry out the on-site drilling, sampling, and monitoring well installation as part of one coordinated scope — so you deal with a single team from fieldwork through to final report, not two separate contractors.

Yes. While our office is based in Wetherill Park, NSW, we regularly undertake projects across all Australian states and territories. Our team has delivered geotechnical investigations in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and the ACT. Contact us to discuss logistics and availability for interstate projects.
